What is an "SR22 Filing"?

An SR-22 Filing is a form issued by an insurance company, which removes a suspension order placed by the DMV on your driving privilege. The filing provides a guarantee to the California Department of Motor Vehicles that an insurance company has issued at least minimum liability coverage for the person making that filing; AND - that the insurance company will notify the DMV should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.

How does a DUI affect SR22 Insurance rates?

Your insurance rates are determined by many factors. Among these rating variables are: age, marital status, driving experience, driving history, and where you live. The SR22 is only a certificate that proves you have met the states financial responsibility (insurance) requirements. Many insurance companies will not insure SR22 clients.

What are our states financial responsibility requirements?

All states have laws determining the minimum or lowest insurance limits that are acceptable. These usually are the coverage's that accompany the SR22
California’s minimum limits are 15/30/5.
15 means $15,000 Bodily Injury Liability per person
30 means $30,000 Bodily Injury Liability per accident (more than one person injured)
5 means $5,000 Property damage per accident.
Liability insurance is protection from the cost of a lawsuit. You should always be able to buy higher limits of protection from the company providing the sr22.

How long must I maintain an SR22 Filing?

A California Insurance Proof Certificate (SR22) filing is required in cases of unsatisfied judgments, major convictions, license suspensions, or failure to have liability insurance at the time of an accident. Your insurance company files this form with the DMV. The filing requirement period can be up to three years. Most major convictions of traffic offenses, such as hit and run, reckless driving, or driving under the influence will remain on your record for seven years from the violation date. Most minor convictions will remain on your record for three years.

How do I get an SR22?

You must obtain minimum liability coverage on all vehicles that are registered to you, both operational and non-operational. If you don't own a motor vehicle, you are required to obtain "non-owners" liability coverage.
